Bubble to React+Supabase: Should you migrate?

The case for leaving Bubble starts with a constraint you can name: a feature you cannot deliver, maintenance that keeps delaying work, or access rules you struggle to verify. A rebuild earns its place when fixing that constraint is worth the cost of moving the product and maintaining a new stack.

What usually prompts a migration

Bubble helps teams launch and test a product without a full development team. As an app grows, they may run into:

  • workflows that are hard to follow
  • interface logic scattered across pages
  • permissions that are difficult to check
  • integrations that need more backend control
  • changes that take too long or often cause bugs

An audit can show whether those problems sit in the current implementation or in limits that a different stack would address.

What React and Supabase provide

React gives your team control over components, frontend state, tests, performance, and shared interface elements.

Supabase provides PostgreSQL, authentication, row-level security, file storage, server-side logic, APIs, and SQL access. You get more control over the backend without building every part from scratch.

The two parts of the target stack

  1. React Components, forms, state and interface tests
  2. Supabase Authentication, APIs and server-side logic
  3. PostgreSQL Relational data and row-level access policies
Your team still needs to design the schema, permissions and behavior.

What the migration involves

A Bubble migration is usually a rebuild. You can reuse data, media, what you have learned about the product, and API contracts with external services.

You still need to rebuild the frontend, workflows, permissions, database structure, validation, and plugin-based features. Allow time for those decisions as well as writing code.

When to migrate

A rebuild is worth considering when several of these apply:

  • You expect to develop the product for years.
  • Permissions, integrations, and workflows keep getting more complicated.
  • Maintenance slows down the team.
  • You need a relational schema, SQL access, or more control over backend logic.
  • Your team can build and maintain React and Supabase.

When to stay

Stay on Bubble if the app works well, performance is acceptable, and planned changes are small. A rewrite that mainly addresses concerns about appearances can take time and money away from useful work.

Before rebuilding screens

  1. Audit

Document current behavior and decide what to keep.

  2. Design

Set the data model, access rules and component patterns.

  3. Verify and switch

Compare the apps, then plan the user and data move.

How to plan the migration

The audit establishes what the product does and what is worth keeping. From there, the team designs the PostgreSQL schema and access rules, separates interface behavior from backend logic, and builds reusable React components.

Testing runs alongside the rebuild: the existing app is the reference for roles, workflows and integrations. The final plan covers how users and data move, including what happens if the switch needs to be reversed.

Start with the audit so the team understands the work before rebuilding screens.
